If the budget is tight, though, then the best budget answer is probably a Spyder5 Express (around $200) - but used with the free after-market Displa圜AL software - this is because the included Spyder5 software is not great at all, and it 'software limits' the Spyder5 Express unit to be far less good than it actually can be. For significant improvement, your budget will climb to $300+ - but you'll get a much better, more accurate device and much better future proofing as well. Basically, if you want the cheapest option that is any good, you'll be spending around $200. There are two answers - the budget answer, and the best answer. So - the question then becomes - which monitor calibrator to buy? This is so out of the gates you're using the best approach. To this end, we also include a free printer profile - normally $50 - with every monitor calibrator purchase over $200. (If you're really experimental with your printing and want to try lots of papers, then the Munki is the best choice unless you have a much larger budget).

We recommend this because the quality of results you get with this approach significantly exceeds the quality of results you'll get with a mid-range combined monitor plus printer calibrator solution like the ColorMunki (which is pretty good) or the SpyderPrint (which we've found to be not really very good at all).

When the Spyder 3's were introduced, Datacolor decided to have three levels of product to offer and the Spyder 3 Pro was somewhat crippled, software wise, as compared to the Spyder 2 Pro.As a rule, we recommend most folks buy an excellent monitor calibrator and (if they're doing their own printing) - use our custom profile service to make profiles for their favourite papers, as opposed to buying calibrators which can handle both monitors and printers. The S2 Pro has a dedicated screen for setting white & black luminance. Yes, but in its day, the Spyder2 Pro was the top model, equivalent to the Elite level available now. The Pro does give some analysis: A Gamut map compared to sRGB, Adobe RGB and NTSC, a Tone Response showing measured gamma curve, a Brightness and Contrast chart showing black level, contrast ratio and white point as a function of 0, 25, 50 75 and 100% brightness nd a table showing the same data for different OSD presets. The Help file is not very clear as to what applies to each model and what doesn't.ĭon't know about the Spyder3 but I could do it with the Spyder2 Pro. I don't see and "Advanced" vs "Easy" option. That is a big time saver and good news for people who feel the Express is too minimal but don't want to spend the $$$ on the Elite. So versus the S4 Elite, with the S4 Pro you are not going to get some of the extra analysis functions or the ability to target a black point but the Pro will handle dual monitors and it does give you an active reading (with a refresh click) of white luminance using the puck sensor prior to the software creating the ICC profile.
So it also allows you to tweak brightness! This is different I think than what the Spyder3 Pro users had.
In this case I'm ignoring the recommended luminance of 180.Īh! this is early in the calibration cycle where you are setting the color temperature (white point) using the advanced mode (as versus the easy mode where everything is automatic and you don't touch the sliders). When you get to what you want click "Continue".
It measured 104.7 so I would tweak the brightness and click "Update" until I get it where I want. Note that it shows color temperature and measured luminance. This shot shows the process after the initial measurements.
